Undergraduate Student Instructions

Case Western Reserve strongly recommends that incoming students complete both of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well as the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE to maximize their opportunities to secure financial assistance from both federal and non-federal sources (such as our own institution). To be considered for federal financial aid alone, you need only complete the FAFSA.

After October 1: Complete the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE®

Over 90% of grant and scholarship assistance offered to Case Western Reserve University undergraduates is provided through Case Western Reserve resources. Entering first-year and transfer students will be required to complete and submit the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE in order to be considered for need-based institutional aid from Case Western Reserve. Dependent students must complete the form with their parents, while independent students complete the form using their own household information. First-year applicants for admission should observe the following priority deadlines for completing the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE in order to ensure they receive an estimated financial aid package with their admission decision:

Early Action Applicants: November 15
PPSP Applicants: December 15
Regular Decision Applicants: February 15

The CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE code for all CWRU undergraduates is 1105.

After January 1: Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid

U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents must complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to be considered for Federal student aid including the Pell Grant, the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), Federal Direct Loans, Federal PLUS Loans and Federal-Work Study. The FAFSA is also required of U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents applying for need-based institutional aid from Case Western Reserve. Dependent students must complete the form with their parents, while independent students complete the form using their own household information. First-year applicants for admission should complete the FAFSA by February 15. Returning students should complete the FAFSA no later than May 15.

The FAFSA school code for all CWRU undergraduates is 003137.

Application Supplements

In the course of processing a student's application, the Office of University Financial Aid will sometimes require additional information. Students will be notified of the request via email.

Notification of Financial Aid Eligibility

Once you have completed the primary application steps, the Office of University Financial Aid will notify you of an initial Financial Aid Award. The types and amounts of financial assistance given on the initial Financial Aid Award are tentative until all application requirements have been met. Whenever additional documentation is submitted to the Office of University Financial Aid, the initial award may be revised based on the new information. It is not unusual for students to receive multiple award revisions over the course of the application process as additional documentation is submitted.

Additional Application Requirements

Some students may need to submit additional documentation. This information will be requested by email and can be viewed by the student by accessing My Financial Aid and viewing the Documents tab.
